Managing daily migraine maintenance

Have you ever experienced that moment in time of a chronic migraine that begins but never stops bugging you? Has there ever been a moment in time, right before the beginning of a rainstorm or thunderstorm, when your chronic migraine tells you the storm is on its way before it even begins? You are not alone; many others experience the same feeling as they also sense the barometric change taking place.

There is something about how the weather pattern tends to impact those with chronic migraines. Specialists haven’t quite figured that one out, but many with chronic migraines know exactly how to be prepared with certain items in their “migraine help kit.”

Creating a migraine kit, then setting that migraine kit by your favorite chair or on your bedside table, is a great step to being ready for when a chronic migraine does begin to bother you. Since there are so many helpful items that can and are used for care, it is valuable to first make a list of what products will help your needs the best when a migraine begins. A good example of a migraine kit with prescription and comfort items is listed below:
Cell phone, favorite thin blanket, silk eye mask, nausea medication, emergency prescription medication, motion sickness medication, specific herbal tea bags, earplugs, and ice pack (bottom row of freezer).

You can always leave yourself a note where the ice pack can be found in the freezer, as is shown in the above example. In some cases, there are chronic migraineurs who would prefer to use heat for migraine pain rather than ice, so they will use a heating pad instead. There are also chronic migraineurs who prefer to use damp heat; every person is different when it comes to recovery from a migraine. What is most valuable is finding what works best for you, whether it be heat or cold, then staying with it. Migraine experiences are always difficult. An important thing to keep note of is the date when those migraines take place to help your specialist see how often they are happening. Another item to keep track of is an updated note of any pain medication changes or updates that have taken place. You could place those notes in a smartphone notepad or iPad journal to keep this information safe and always available when you need to review.

Having a migraine regardless of when is a difficult period and no person should be left to deal with this alone. If you are someone that experiences them please reach out to a support group for help as they do understand the reality of having migraines and you will not be by yourself.
