Huddle application review on Linked In

I started toying with something called Huddle on Linked In to learn more about it first of all and secondly to get a feel for how it would benefit me as a web developer. I’ve noticed that it’s a pretty solid application in comparison to the others that I have tried in the past. Huddle actually does give you the benefit of setting preferences the way you want them and not how they “think” you should have them which is what I like most about it.

It’s just like considering an open source operating system over a proprietary operating system. Open source software provides freedom so a developer can build and create their coding applications. Proprietary software in a developer’s world only locks up the capability.

The Huddle application reminds me of that New York broad way saying, “the show will go on” because the application is all performance, not beauty.

10 Easy Steps To Build a Website by Sue Elvins

Congratulations for deciding to build a web site on your own. It is exciting but can also be frustrating if you do not have the right tools. What helps a lot is having beginner knowledge in HTML. To improve your chances at better success, I have created 10 easy steps to follow as a cheat sheet.

1. Choose your domain name.

2. Determine what type of software you will use for an HTML editor.

3. Determine what type of software you will use for an FTP software

4. Determine your pages (layout, color, etc); index.html, about us.html, etc

5. Find rich key words for your content

6. Write your content for each page

7. Work your key words into your meta tags, images, titles and keyword section

8. Edit your pages; check links, grammar, etc

9. Upload pages to your server and submit URL to major search engines

10. Exchange links with compatible websites.

1. Choose your domain name

Whatever you name your business is what you should use as a domain name. For example, if you have a store called Trina’s Stationary you might want to consider something like trinastationary.com. Businesses do a play on words when deciding on domain names. The goal is to use something short and catchy so that it will be remembered right after heard. The mixing of key words can also provide help. Use of a thesaurus and dictionary are help in this situation. If you think you have a good mixture for your domain name, contact a host who can help you search out available names!

2. HTML editors

There are many web page editors available, what is important is finding something you are comfortable in using. Only get something you will be using and what you will feel is user friendly. If it doesn’t feel good, don’t use it and try another. There are many types of freeware available so purchasing Dream Weaver or Front Page is not a necessary thing. HTML Editor is a nice freeware for beginners as it is WYSIWYG – What You See Is What You Get

3. FTP editors

You can use the Fire Fox browser plug in (Fire FTP) or you have freeware options for example FileZilla. It is not necessary to purchase FTP software in this case. Your host should have a cPanel (ask them for information if not sure) for uploading files to your web server as well.

4. Determine your pages.

Determine your color and layout first then name your pages, index.html, about us.html, etc what specific pages will you be using? Every page needs an index page so that is one for sure but will you be using a links page or an about us page also? Write down each page that you will be using. What I do is get my main page (index.html) then keep resaving it until I have all of the pages I need. For example, I will do a resave of the index.html to aboutus.html then resave of the aboutus.html to links.html and so on until I have completed them all. A suggestion you might want to consider is saving a copy of your index.html page and naming it default.html I do this just in case there is a page I want to build later on, it has everything on it; all I have to do is change the name.

5. Find rich key words for your content

You can do this using basic Google or another keyword search as Word Tracker. To analyze your keywords all that needs to be done is enter in your keyword and it will be searched to determine how many have used it and the rating it has gotten. Main tag words are going to be an important thing to know when building your web site so it is a must to get them now before you start writing your content to determine what is most powerful for what you need.

6. Write your content for each page

Write your page content around the Meta key words you have found to have the most rating on the search engines. This is something you should continue to check because if you have too many of one key word it will be considered spam, too little and the page you are trying to give a high ranking to may not receive it.

7. Work your key words into your Meta tags, images, titles and keyword section

Be sure to use your key words in your Meta tags, page description, and page title. It is important for all of those areas to be filled out using key words that support that particular page it is for.

8. Edit your pages; check links, grammar, etc

Be sure to debug your pages before you save them. Many times we are in a rush and possibly forget to fix our errors before we save them which can cause a problem especially if we did not see it. Double checking your pages of grammar, punctuation, and layout can save you a lot of time in the long run.

9. Upload pages to your server and submit URL to major search engines.

In order to upload pages from your local hard drive to your web site, you will need to make use of applications such as Cute FTP or FreeFTP. Another application that is available directly from your server is called cPANEL which will allow you to upload files freely using the server scripts. If you choose cPANEL for uploading, no other FTP software will be needed.

10. Exchange links with compatible websites.

It is a good idea to plan ahead with exchange links. If you do not have web sites at this time, don’t fret, all is not lost. However one word of advice, go with who you trust! Automatic link exchanges are not always the best route to go. A lot of times it is better to find someone you know by word of mouth that you can trust. Final rule of thumb, compatibility of business is everything!
